We are extremely fortunate in the fact that we have a Squadron of Air Cadets in Knighton which caters for young people aged 13 to 17 (and 12 year olds in year 8) who meet from 7pm – 9.30pm every Monday night, including throughout the school holidays. We meet at The Drill Hall, Bowling Green Lane, Knighton, LD7 1DR.
For a very small monthly fee, cadets take part in a fantastic range of activities which would cost a lot more elsewhere. With qualified and experienced staff supervising pursuits from climbing to shooting, canoeing to camping and rafting to mountain biking, there are lots of opportunities to take part in outdoor and adventurous activities. Being the Air Cadets, flying and gliding are also offered, in addition to sports, musical events, parade, drill and community volunteering. Cadets have opportunities and are supported to gain qualifications such as BTECs and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, as well as gaining independence, practical life skills and making lots of new friends. Uniform is provided, including equipment for all the activities and usually transport to the various locations.
Unfortunately, numbers have dwindled recently meaning that the Squadron is threatened with closure and Cadets will have to travel to Llandrindod Wells every week. Although it wouldn’t suit everyone, there must be plenty of teenagers locally who would love to take part. If we don’t use it we will lose it!
