Caring for Knighton’s Environment

There are a lot of environmental initiatives in Knighton with a number of groups and individuals working hard to make Knighton, and the rest of the world, a better place now and for future generations.

Knighton Town Council runs the local recycling facilities in the car park on Bowling Green Lane.  The materials gathered here are sold to waste merchants and the funds raised are distributed to local good causes and local events.

Knighton has a very active local environment group – Teme Valley Environment Group – that has led and inspired a number of initiatives in the town.  These include a community allotment, planting fruit and nut trees around the town for the enjoyment and benefit of local people, the Zero Miles fruit and veg stall at the Farmers’ market and working with Keep Wales Tidy to improve the local environment through the Tidy Towns scheme.  For more information please visit the Teme Valley Environment Group (TVEG) website.

Another recent development has been the setting up of the Knighton Tree Allotments Trust to provide wood for fuel and other woodland products, whilst maintaining healthy vibrant woodlands for wildlife and ensuring biodiversity for future generations.  A not-for-profit company, Knighton Tree Allotments Trust aims to provide the woodlands our community needs for a sustainable future and is now looking for land and woodlands to buy, lease or manage, preferably within a 5 mile radius of Knighton. The Trust is currently managing 2 local woodlands, has over 30 volunteers, and is organising workdays as well as regular flora and fauna surveys. They also provide training in woodland management and use of tools. Please contact Angie if you are interested in volunteering with KTAT or if you have any land that might be suitable or become a Friend of the Knighton Tree Allotments Trust.
